Featuring more than 120 dedicated staff, The Daily has failed to gain traction as an iPad dedicated daily newspaper with the digital publication to be folded into the News Corp owned New York Post before the end of the year. The final issue of The Daily will be released on December 15.
“From its launch, The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation,” News Corp’ Rupert Murdoch said in an official statement reported by AllThingsD, another News Corps owned outlet.
“Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not find a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable in the long-term. Therefore we will take the very best of what we have learned at The Daily and apply it to all our properties.
“Under the editorial leadership of Editor-in-Chief Col Allan and the business and digital leadership of Jesse, I know The New York Post will continue to grow and become stronger on the web, on mobile, and not least, the paper itself. I want to thank all of the journalists, digital and business professionals for the hard work they put into The Daily.”
With The Daily to cease being in just a matter of days, the iPad publication’s demise has long been on the cards with a third of the title’s staff being cut earlier in the year, sparking a flurry of rumours that it was soon to be on its way out.
Originally released less than two years ago, The Daily was made available in the US from its February 2 2011 launch date before being rolled out to the UK at a later date. Available with Weekly and Annual subscriptions, The Daily set users back either 69 pence per week or £27.99 for a full 12 month service.
