New Xbox app for Windows 10 sets stage for console-to-PC game streaming

Windows 10 might not be arriving on Xbox One until ‘post-Summer,’ but Microsoft is bringing a little more Xbox One to Windows 10 from today.

The new version of the Xbox app for Windows 10 is rolling out to preview members this week. The refreshed application sees the return of Avatar support, deeper Friends interaction as well as the ability to view Game Hubs.

However, excitingly, Microsoft is also setting the stage for bigger things to come, like the ability to stream games from an Xbox One to a Windows 10 PC.

Using the next version of the Xbox app, PC users can volunteer diagnostics information about their PC and network to help Microsoft build the feature. Naturally, all data will be anonymous.

The Xbox team needs your help in providing information about your PC’s performance and connectivity characteristics as we prepare to enable game streaming from Xbox One to Windows 10 PCs,” a post on the Xbox Wire site reads.

The app also brings the long-touted ability to turn the Xbox One console on and off from Windows 10 devices.

Finally, the preview app brings improved Game DVR integration. Gamers will be able to view and manage cloud-based clips from the Xbox app, while they can also alter keyboard shortcuts.

“The Xbox app on Windows 10 PCs will automatically update to the May preview version when it becomes available in the Windows Store,” Microsoft added.
