Windows Sets could fundamentally change how we work on PCs

Microsoft is about to begin trialling a new Windows 10 feature that would enable users to group apps together in tabs, rather than requiring a separate window for each.

The new ‘Sets’ feature, which could explicitly change the way in which we multitask in Windows 10, takes it cue from web browsers such as Microsoft’s own Edge platform.

If the new tool makes it to consumer edition of Windows 10 – it’s coming to Windows Insiders soon – then it could have some major benefits for consumers.

Users could have windows with tabs for multiple apps, for different work and personal projects, making it easy to focus on one or the other.

So, for example, your email inbox, web browser, word processor and photo editing software could exist in a single location.

Helpfully, much like the way tabs work in web browser, Microsoft Sets will enable users to open a new tab to see a frequent destinations menu featuring common apps.

Scrolling down the page shows a red of recent documents, pinned items and shared files. Choosing a new app or file will open it in the tab next to the original element.

Given this could represent a fundamental change in the way we use Windows 10, we’re not sure when Sets will be released to consumers.

Microsoft needs to get this one right so it may or may not be part of the next Redstone update scheduled for next spring.
