New Windows 10 preview for phones lands on 35 Lumia devices

Microsoft has released the latest preview version of Windows 10 for smartphones, significantly increasing the number of compatible devices in the process.

The latest Technical Preview for those currently running Windows Phone 8.1 is now available on 35 Lumia handsets, up from the six devices able to run the first release.

It’s not just a compatibility boost either. Far from it. The new Windows 10 preview for phones includes Microsoft’s IE-supplanting Spartan browser.

There’s also the addition of six essential apps for Windows Phone fans to test drive. The new version includes Mail, Messages, Calendar, Maps, People and Phone.

The release comes at the end of a busy week for Microsoft’s Windows 10 team. On Wednesday the firm rolled Movies and TV shows into the new unified Windows 10 store, which will eventually be available across all devices.

The company is gearing up for a full summer release for Windows 10, which will be a free upgrade for the first year.

Microsoft says more smartphones will become compatible in future versions, including those handsets outside of the Lumia stable.

“This is definitely not the final list of devices,” wrote Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, “and we’re still hard at work to let people with other phones get hands-on with Windows 10 in the near future, including non-Lumia devices as well.”
