Fresh images of the so-called Sony Xperia Tablet have hit the web, confirming a significantly sleeker device than the quirky Sony Tablet S.

As we reported at the beginning of August, Sony is planning on releasing its fist Xperia-branded tablet. The Sony Tablet S successor will reportedly keep the unusual 9.4-inch screen size as well as - somewhat surprisingly - the same 1280 x 800 resolution.

One element that will be new and relatively cutting edge will be the Sony Xperia Tablet’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Other than this - and the reported Android 4.0 “or higher” OS - the key advance for the Xperia Tablet will be in terms of external design.

This has become especially apparent after more new images were added to the original XDA-developers post that revealed much of the above information. While Sony is bravely keeping the open book shape of the Sony Tablet S, the wedge effect isn’t nearly as pronounced. In fact, it looks positively classy, and almost laptop-like.

It appears the Sony Xperia Tablet will be significantly thinner than the chubby Tablet S, which was 10.1mm even at its thinnest point.

The Sony Xperia Tablet will apparently be a relatively low cost device, with retail prices rumoured to be set at $449.99, $549.99, and $649.99 for the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models respectively.

We’re a little concerned about those standard definition display reports - is that enough in these post-Retina display times? But an affordable full-sized quad core Android tablet certainly appeals. Especially now that we know Android Jelly Bean can work so well as a tablet OS.
