New Now TV box does support full HD, opens door for 1080p streams

Yesterday, we brought news that Sky’s next-generation Now TV set-top box would go on sale this week, ahead of the new football season.

Beneath the report some of our readers expressed surprise the £15 hockey puck only supported 720p output.

However, new information has emerged on Wednesday that may brighten the days of full HD-seekers.

Sky has revealed the new Now TV box does in fact support 1080p content, but the firm will continue to pump out Sky Sports, movies and dramas at the lesser 720p resolution through the Now TV app.

Engadget reports Sky has “no immediate plans” to jump to full HD, but that’s not to say it won’t do so in the future.

However for the box’s apps that do enable full HD streams, the new Roku-made set-topper will be able to handle the full resolution.

The revamped box features a design more akin to the Roku 3, while boasting a processor five times the speed of its predecessor. There’s also an Ethernet port for those seeking wired connections.

You can get it online from tomorrow and in Argos from Friday and, with today’s news, it’s a better deal than previously thought.
