New Nintendo 3DS to get better quality games with Unity support

The New Nintendo 3DS is going to get better games in the future thanks to Unity engine support.

Unity Technologies has announced the New 3DS and larger New 3DS XL are getting Unity support.

According to Unite 2015 Tokyo event attendee Mark MacDonald, 8-4 Ltd Executive Director, Unity is working on bringing Unity engine support to the New 3DS pair.

Details about the specifics of the Unity support are very scarce at the moment, but hopefully we’ll be able to uncover some more information soon about how it will affect Nintendo titles in the future.

Nintendo said last March that it was “looking at” bringing Unity support to 3DS, alongside revealing that there were more than 50 Wii U games already utilising the Unity engine.

Unity Technologies entered a partnership with Nintendo for Wii U titles back in late 2012, allowing developers to bring their existing games to the Wii U platform.

As part of the Wii U developers programme, Nintendo also provided Unity Pro tools to digital developers for free to aid the transition.

Unity powers pretty much every major iOS and Android mobile game, including the likes of Monument Valley, The Room, Crossy Road and Republique.

You’ll also find Unity powering PC and console titles such as the stunning Ori and the Blind Forest and Firewatch.

Hopefully, we’ll see a bunch of new and interesting games hit the Nintendo eShop exclusively for the New 3DS and New 3DS XL handhelds soon.

The New 3DS and New 3DS XL have better processors than their predecessors, which means immediate improvements to download speeds, loading speeds and a more responsive UI.

But with the processing improvements, Nintendo promises that we’ll start seeing a significant bump to games too. That’s only so far been seen in Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, but with the hardware upgrades and Unity that could all be about to change.
