New LG Nexus phone with 3D camera rumoured to be in the works

A fresh rumour suggests that LG is working on a new Nexus phone with a 3D camera.

Many were disappointed when there wasn’t a direct successor to the Nexus 5 launched in 2014, but there have been various murmurs suggesting that such a phone might be forthcoming later this year.

The latest of those murmurs comes from South Korea’s iNews24. It claims that LG will have its Android M-running smartphone ready for an October launch.

That’s all pretty safe and predictable, but the report also carries some interesting claims about additional components. One of these will be a 3D camera.

Why this will be deemed necessary isn’t made clear, but it’s worth remembering that Google is currently working on Project Tango, an advanced mobile camera that can map 3D space.

The report also claims that Google and LG will turn to Qualcomm and its Snapdragon 810 CPU to power this new Nexus, despite recent concerns over its performance and excessive heat generation.

We can also expect any new Nexus phone to come with a fingerprint sensor and a USB-C port, as both are supported in early Android M developer builds.

Besides this LG smartphone, it’s also been heavily rumoured that Huawei will provide a direct phablet follow-up to the Nexus 6.
