Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know
Hands on: iPad 3 Review

As part of the launch presentation of the new iPad, Apple used several slides to demonstrate the effects of the “Retina Display” style screen. Want to know how much better the new iPad screen is than the iPad 2’s? Read on.

The big news about the new iPad screen is that it offers twice the vertical resolution and twice the horizontal resolution of the previous model. The res is 2,048 x 1,536, up from 1,024 x 768. A very big difference.

The result is four times the number of pixels – more than three million – and double the pixel density. It’s impressive stuff. While the basic IPS screen tech appears to be the same, Apple has also improved colour performance, by a claimed 44 percent.

As you can see, the new iPad screen is much sharper and more detailed than that of the iPad 2. Manufacturers can often be accused of bigging-up their product’s minor changes more than is strictly necessary, but Apple has reason to brag here.

The iPad 2 screen – while gorgeous in most respects – is very blocky by modern standards. With pixel density of just 131dpi, you don’t have to get at all close to the screen to discern single pixels. It’s something that has become increasingly apparent now that so many phones offer very high pixel-density screens.

This is good news for all aspects of tablet life. Web browsing will look cleaner, small text will be much more readable, and gaming should benefit massively. The jagged edges you can see in many iPad games at present will soon be a thing of the past – as long as you don’t hold onto your old-hat edition, that is. What do you think about the new screen of the iPad? Not bothered or just the ticket?
