The launch of the new iPad drew-in fewer people than either of the previous iPads, at the London Regent Street store. Is Apple mania finally dying down a bit?
We trotted on down to the new iPad launch at the Regent Street Apple Store this morning, but Dynamo PR went even further. It counted every person in the queue at the store, and found that they totalled a “mere” 397 at 7:58am, just before the store opened. That may sound like a huge crowd, but the iPad 2 managed 632 devotees and the first 451. Could this be a sign that fewer people are willing to upgrade their iPad every year than their iPhone?
Well, there are several factors that dilute this idea. Apple launched a brand new store in London’s Harrods in-line with the launch, which may have drawn some Regent Street fans away, and PC World one-upped Apple by opening at midnight the night before.
Dynamo PR also polled the first hundred people in the crowd and uncovered some other interesting facts. Apparently, 45 percent of people questioned did not own a tablet – iPad virgins, if you will – and 57 percent said they were there to snap up a 64GB Wi-Fi 4G edition, worth a cool £659. What we’d like to know is how many plan to sling the thing on eBay once stocks run dry. A few more neat facts, courtesy of the poll:
- 61 percent of people said the Retina Display was their top new iPad feature.
- Only 15 percent said they wanted one for gaming, down from 33 percent for last year’s iPad 2.
- 73 percent own an iPhone.
- Just 12 percent of the people in the queue were female.
