The new iPad sold three million units in its first three days. It makes us wish Apple had called it the iPad 3 – a holy trinity of threes has something kinda poetic about it.
Apple has announced that the new iPad has hit three million sales, making it the “strongest iPad launch” to date according to Apple senior vice president Philip Schiller. The new iPad launched on Friday 16 March in 12 territories including the US and UK. Apple must really have pulled out all the stops to get stock on the shelves, because there were still iPads on shelves come the afternoon in London stores – previous iPads were much harder to get hold of at launch.
The main upgrades in the new iPad are its much-improved screen – now 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, making it much higher-res than a 1080p television – and a quad-core graphics chip. Technologically-speaking, its high-capacity battery is perhaps the most impressive of all the new features, packing 11,000-plus mAh. However, as it brings the same 10hr battery life as the iPad 2, it’s bound to get ignored by many buyers.
Many other territories are still waiting to get hold of the new iPad, and with many other launches scheduled for 23 March, another great big sales boost is all-but inevitable. The series as a whole has sold well over 50 million units, decimating any single range of Android tablets.
The Apple iPad is available in the UK from £399, and the Apple Store website currently shows a lead time of 1-2 weeks.
