A second-generation Google Nexus 7 tablet has been officially unveiled, with the revised 7-inch tablet running the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS and the highest resolution display currently on a 7-inch tablet.
The first piece of hardware to run the overhauled Android software, the new Google Nexus 7 builds on last year’s original model with a Full HD display included alongside improved camera optics, a faster, quad-core CPU and an equally impressive wallet-friendly price point.
“The Nexus 7 launched a year ago and it’s been a great success,” Hugo Berra, Google Vice President of Android Product Management said at the US based unveiling. “Today, together with Asus we are announcing the new Nexus 7.”

A device that has been shrouded in much rumour and speculation, the new Google Nexus 7 features are now official and see the impressive collection of innards kicked off with the latest version of Android.
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is not quite the wholehearted Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie update some were hoping for, but will see the new Nexus 7 benefit from a range of updates.
“The new nexus 7 is the first device shipping with Android 4.3 which is the newest version of Jelly Bean which we are announcing today,” Barra said.
Android 4.3 sees improved multi-user options with restrictive content features offering parents the chance to limit what their kids can access. Bluetooth Smart and Open GL graphic improvements also feature on the revise OS.
On the hardware front, the new Google Nexus 7 sees a 7-inch display make the cut with an impressive 1920 x 1200 pixel Full HD resolution. This display panel boasts a hugely impressive 323 pixels-per-inch image density, which means it has the highest resolution of any 7-inch tablet.
Powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 80 per cent faster than the original Nexus 7, the new Google tablet adds 2GB of RAM alongside the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G connectivity options. It has a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a 1.2-megapixel at the front.
Helping make the iPad mini rival an even more enticing multimedia prospect, the Full HD display is partnered with new, dual stereo speakers that further benefit from Fraunhofer’s virtual surround sound technology. Google reckons “it’s like having a 5.1 sound system just using the tablet’s speakers or a pair of headphones”.
Despite making a considerable jump in screen quality and CPU performance over its predecessor, the new Google Nexus 7 is said to add an extra hour of battery life, taking its staying power up to 10 hours. The tablet even supports wireless charging.
