New Google Glass to be powered by Intel

Intel has allegedly signed a deal with Google to power the next iteration of Google Glass.

The first model of Google’s wearable was powered by a Texas Instruments chip, but for the next one Google is said to be turning to Intel.

That’s according to a new Wall Street Journal report, at least. Apparently, this forms part of the chip maker’s push into wearable technology.

The second generation Google Glass is expected to have markedly improved battery life, with the onus being on Intel’s as-yet-undisclosed chip to provide that.

According to the report, Intel will do more than just provide the chips to power the next generation of Google Glass. It will also have a hand in generating new business for the line, including pushing Google Glass to hospital networks and manufacturers, among others.

Indeed, with the whole Google Glass concept yet to catch on with consumers, it’s thought that such professional adoption might be a way forward. Google’s Glass at Work initiative aims to push Google Glass usage in such industries.

Intel has very publicly stated that it’s aiming to get into the wearables market after appearing to miss the boat on mobile. Back in September, the company announced the MICA, a fashion-focused smart bracelet with a premium price tag.

This saw Intel partnering up with fashion company Opening Ceremony, but it will be hoping for an even more fruitful partnership with the search giant.
