New Baldur’s Gate announced, set between 1 and 2

A brand new Baldur’s Gate has been announced, with the expansion lying between the first and second games.

It’s been 17 years since the release of Baldur’s Gate, which seems a strange time to release an expansion pack to the original game.

However, developer Beamdog, who was responsible for releasing the Enhanced Editions of the two Baldur’s Gate games, have done just that.

Beamdog has announced Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, a brand new entry to the series that set between Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II.

Siege of Dragonspear will run on the Infinity Engine and will tell a story post-Sarevok but pre-Irenicus.

“The events between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition are at last revealed in this exciting new expansion to the original game,” explained Beamdog.

“Though Sarevok is dead and his plan for war averted, peace eludes the citizens of Baldur’s Gate. A crusade marches in the north, seizing supplies, forcing locals into military service, and disrupting trade along the Sword Coast. A charismatic warrior known as the Shining Lady leads this army, her background shrouded in mystery. Can the rumours be true – is she, like you, a child of god?”

“The closer you get to the Shining Lady, the more you realise your father, the dead Lord of Murder still casts a long shadow upon your path. Baldur’s Gate has put its faith in you, but you must determine whose interests you truly serve before you face the Shining Lady among the ruins of Dragonspear Castle.”

If you’ve not heard of Baldur’s Gate before (shame on you), it’s a top-down isometric RPG that follows strict Dungeons and Dragons’ rules, although it does let you pause during combat.

Developer Beamdog is made up of some ex-Bioware chaps, who have spent the past few years porting and enhancing old Infinity Engine titles.

Sadly there’s no firm Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear release date as yet, but it will be out “soon” for PC, Mac and Linux. There will also be iOS and Android versions released at a later date.
