The launch of the second generation Apple TV back in 2010 was a little underwhelming to say the least and while the possibility of an iTV at some stage this year is very exciting, a third generation Apple TV could be on its way very soon.
The people over on 9To5Mac have unearthed some information about the Apple TV in the iOS 5.1 B software. In the same way they discovered the iPad 3 in the iOS 5.1 Beta software, we see that the next generation Apple TV is codenamed “J33” and “AppleTV 3,1”
The code also reveals that the new Apple TV will feature low power Bluetooth 4.0 but beyond that, little is known for certain. So what could we be seeing in the updated Apple TV? Among the possibilities are 1080p support, a faster A6 chip, some internal storage to allow downloads, the inclusion of the App Store and vastly improved codec support.
We may not have to wait long to find out however as most major retailers in the US are listing the second generation Apple TV as out of stock and with the iPad 3 launch all but confirmed for the first week of March, we could be looking at a dual announcement in San Francisco by Tim Cook.
Let us know in the comments below what you would like to see in the updated Apple TV and whether you might be holding out for the Apple iTV which could be launching before the end of 2012.
