New Apple 5K iMac supports up to 64GB RAM

Apple updated its entire iMac line-up yesterday but it skimmed over one important detail.

It turns out that the 27.5-inch iMac with 5K Retina display supports up to 64GB of RAM.

That’s an upgrade from the previous generation of 27.5-inch iMacs, which could only support a maximum of 32GB of memory.

The huge memory base was first announced by Other World Computing (OWC), a hardware company that upgrades for Apple Macs.

The company revealed that the new 27.5-inch iMac includes four memory slots, each of which supports 16GB of memory.

As such, OWC will begin selling new 48GB and 64GB memory kits starting tomorrow.

For the 48GB kit – that’s 2 x 16GB plus 2 x 8GB – you can expect to pay $729.

The 64GB kit, meanwhile, will retail at $1,195 – that’s for four 16GB modules.

The actual machine itself starts at $1,799 from Apple, which comes with 8GB of RAM as standard.

The base model also features a 3.2GHz quad-core processor, a 1TB hard drive, and an AMD Radeon R9 M380 GPU.

We should note that the new 21.5-inch 4K Retina iMac can’t be upgraded. OWC discovered this in a teardown, revealing that the memory is soldered in.

As such, the maximum RAM you can have on that particular model is the 16GB supplied directly by Apple.
