New Amazon Kindle Paperwhite reader confirmed

Amazon has announced a new version of its popular Kindle Paperwhite ereader device, which will be released on October 9 in the UK.

The newest version of the company’s flagship Kindle reader brings new display technology, promising higher contrast and better reflectivity to ensure whiter whites and blacker blacks.

The processor within the device, which is Amazon’s 6th generation Kindle, is also 25 per cent faster, while new capacitive touchscreen technology ensures the device will be more responsive than ever before. There’s also a new built-in light that guides light towards the surface of the reader without causing eyestrain.

In terms of new features, the second-gen Paperwhite also integrates the Goodreads social network, a 20-million strong army of book reviewers. Amazon purchased the company in March this year for an undisclosed fee.

There’s also a new Kindle Page Flip functionality which allows users to skim read the book without losing their page, while Kindle Free Time which helps parents encourage kids to read by rewarding them with badges for progress made and books finished.

The new Paperwhite, which can be pre-ordered from today from £109, also features a Vocabulary Builder, which compiles the words you look up in the dictionary into an easy to access list. Finally, Kindle Matchbook also allows users to buy Kindle versions of pre-purchased books (past, present or future) on the cheap.

The device’s major selling point was its ‘reads like paper’ white screen which replaced the dull e-ink. It offers 8 weeks of battery life on a single charge and built-in built-in Wi-Fi and free 3G.

The original Paperwhite was a huge hit and although this year’s update isn’t exactly a blockbuster, it’s enough to make the best ereader on the market even better.
