New Amazon Fire HD 8 is a seriously cheap 8-inch tablet

Amazon has announced a 2016 refresh to its flagship Fire HD range, with the addition of the new Amazon Fire HD 8.

Amazon’s Fire HD line-up is a cheap alternative to expensive tablet rivals running on iOS and Android. The latest entrant to the series is the Fire HD 8, a revamp of last year’s model that features an 8-inch screen, a quad-core processor, and a 12-hour battery life – all for £89.99.

Here are the new Fire HD 8 specs:

  • 8-inch screen
  • 1,280 x 800 pixel display (189ppi)
  • 1.3GHz quad-core processor
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 16/32GB storage
  • MicroSD card slot (up to 200GB)
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Stereo speakers

The Fire HD 8 runs on Amazon’s custom-built Fire OS 5, which features a magazine-style UI and the Amazon Underground app store. Underground is packed with premium apps and games that are 100% free – no cost to download, and no in-app purchases either. Speaking about the new tablet, Jorrit Van der Meulen, VP of Amazon Devices in Europe, said:

We believe in a different approach to tablets – providing premium products at non-premium prices – and customers love it. In fact, we’ve seen our Fire tablet sales more than double year-over-year as a result. The all-new Fire HD 8 packs more battery life, more storage, and faster performance – all for less than £90.”
