New 3DS update brings Amiibo support

An update for the New Nintendo 3DS has brought Amiibo support to the handheld console.

The latest system software available for the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS along with the new 3DS will introduce several new features for the range.

Although the Amiibo support is limited to the NFC equipped new 3DS, the other handheld consoles do get some added options.

For example, the full range will be able to choose multiple themes for the homescreen.

A new Shuffle Favourites option has appeared in the Change Theme in the Home Menu settings. This enables you to set the 3DS to cycle through multiple themes when the system is “left in Sleep Mode from the Home Menu or turned on after being off”.

They will also be able to capture screenshots with both the upper and lower screens included. Previously it was limited to either one or the other.

The update also allows you to download available software updates from the Home Menu.

Of course, the new 3DS’ Amiibo support is the biggest addition for this update.

An Amiibo settings menu has been added to the Home Screen and allows you to register the owner and the character’s nickname to your 3DS. You can also erase the stored data on the Amiibo.

However, not only is the new 3DS only available in Australia and Japan, but Amiibo’s currently aren’t compatible with any 3DS games.

There isn’t even a date set for compatibility at this stage. In the future, Nintendo will release an NFC adaptor to make the original 3DS, 2DS and 3DS XL compatible with the figures.

Hopefully, we’ll receive some fresh information in the new year about full 3DS support for the little toys.
