Netflix tops Golden Globe nominations for first time

In a significant endorsement of Netflix’s original content strategy, the streaming platform has topped the nominations for the forthcoming Golden Globe Awards.

The company’s various first run shows have racked up 8 nominations, beating the likes of HBO, Showtime as well as traditional broadcast networks in the United States.

It is the first time that Netflix has earned the most nominations and the first time in a decade HBO hasn’t.

The nominations (via Variety) went to Orange is the New Black (2), Narcos (2), House of Cards, Grace & Frankie, Bloodline and Master of None.

Popular shows Jessica Jones and Daredevil weren’t recognised, so the haul might have been higher for Ted Sarandos’ company.

There was also success for Amazon’s streamed shows with Transparent earning three noms and Mozart in the Jungle a pair.

To continue tech angle, HBO’s Silicon Valley earned a nod for Best TV Comedy.

The validation for Netflix comes as the company prepares to double down on original TV content in 2016.

The streaming pioneer released 16 series in 2015, a figure which will rise to 31 next year.
