Netflix to release first film next year

Netflix is to release its first feature film next year, the video streaming specialist has confirmed.

Having seen success with its own bespoke TV series’ such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, the company has confirmed it will make its first foray into the feature film space in 2015.

Having struck up a deal with the Weinstein Company, Netflix will release a sequel to Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. As well as launching on Netflix to streaming subscribers, the film will be shown in Imax cinemas around the world.

Pencilled in for an August release, the film will be entitled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend.

“The movie-going experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Company, said in making the announcement.

“We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”

Although the upcoming film will see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as protagonist warrior Yu Shu-Lien, Ang Lee will not take on the director’s duties.

That responsibility has been handed to Chinese director Yuen Wo-Ping.

Earlier this year Netflix confirmed it had hit the 50 million user milestone following its expansion in to more than 40 countries.
