Netflix to exclusively stream The Hunger Games

Netflix has announced that it will exclusively offer The Hunger Games via its online streaming service from March 3 in the UK and Ireland.

The subscription-based streaming site will offer the blockbuster to the UK and Ireland ahead of the US, which will receive the film later this year.

At the moment Netflix is the exclusive online service to offer the film, an international hit in 2012 based on the book of the same name by Suzanne Collins and starring Jennifer Lawrence. However, it is possible that competitors like Amazon’s LoveFilm could pick up The Hunger Games later on.

The Hunger Games is already available to watch online via the Tesco-owned Blinkbox video-on-demand service on a pay-per-view basis.

“We are thrilled to be the exclusive online home for The Hunger Games in the UK and Ireland,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix. “Since launching in the UK and Ireland in January 2013, we have continued to expand our offering of great movies and TV programmes, and we think our members are going to love the latest addition to the service.”

Netflix is still enjoying the recent success with its own House of Cards original series starring Kevin Spacey, which the company announced as the most watched programme on the site. To secure two series of the political drama, Netflix forked out $100 million, but with the launch weekend causing Netflix subscribers to jam as many episodes in one sitting as humanly possible, it seems it was a worthy gamble for the LoveFilm rival.

Will you be watching The Hunger Games when it hits the Netflix site this weekend? Did you enjoy the film when it came out in cinemas last year? Let us know via the Trusted Reviews Facebook and Twitter feeds or the comment boxes below.
