Netflix’s bold new redesign for the web is rolling out today

Last month streaming giant Netflix announced a killer new design for its web-based portal. Today, we’re happy to report, the revamp has begun its roll out to all members.

The new interface, which is similar to the company’s iPad and Smart TV apps, is designed to make it far easier for viewers to find content quickly. It abandons the frustrating, slow-moving carousel and introduces larger thumbnails and a dark design a la the firm’s mobile platforms.

Instead of users having to hover over thumbnails to see a brief description and limited options, Netflix streamers can now click on a thumbnail to see an expanded view. The hovering functionality is now served for a slideshow of images, that Netflix says will give folks more of a ‘feel for what the show is about than reading the description alone.’

Now, following around three weeks of testing the platform on a limited number of members, Netflix has confirmed the finished product is ready to rock. The roll out is underway and it’ll be with everyone in the next couple of weeks.

In a post on the company blog (via The Verge), Netflix says: “Over the past four years, web browsers have changed a lot, becoming more sophisticated and allowing for richer visuals and animations. How our members use Netflix has changed too. We’re spending more and more time using mobile and tablet apps.

With the new Netflix website, we’ve created a richer, more visual experience, and a website that works more like an app and less like a series of linked web pages. Information appears in-line and in context rather than on a separate page, which makes exploring the catalog faster than ever before.”
