Netflix HDR 4K arriving later this year on LG TVs

Netflix has revealed it is introducing High Dynamic Range (HDR) to its 4K UHD streaming later this year.

As part of its partnership with LG, Netflix is working to add HDR to its top end 4K UHD streaming content sometime in 2015. Or so it announced during the LG CES 2015 press conference.

This time last year, Netflix announced 4K streaming for its content in partnership with LG TVs, but that has since expanded to other devices.

“This year, we’re doubling down on that [4K UHD] innovation. We are working together [with LG] to add High Dynamic Range or HDR to further improve the quality of video available to users,” explained Netflix Chief Streaming and Partnership Officer, Greg Peters.

“So not just more pixels, but better pixels. HDR is coming to Netflix and LG TVs this year.”

There’s no timeline as to when the HDR will arrive, but we assume it will launch in line with the latest LG OLED range, including the new 77-inch flexible OLED TV.

Peters described watching Netflix Originals series Marco Polo on a new LG OLED display in 4K.

“The beautiful landscape, the stunning vistas, these nail biting battle scenes, the exquisite detail in the sets and the costumes all rendered in breathtaking 4K. I thought to myself, this is how Netflix Originals should be watched.”

Netflix also announced the Netflix Recommended TV programme.

“Those consumers who really care about the quality of internet TV and the quality of their Netflix experience because they want the Netflix experience. They can be confident that a TV with the Netflix Recommended designation will provide them with the best in accessibility, ease of use and performance.”
