Netflix data-saving mode pops up in Android beta, then disappears

Back at MWC 2016 Netflix announced it’d be launching a new data-saving mode, which would make it easier for subscribers to watch content on the go without drinking down their allowance.

The mode, set for release on iOS and Android later this year, briefly popped up on Monday in what was initially thought to be a new Netflix beta program for Android users.

Those able to access the feature spotted a new data meter button in the top right corner of videos during playback. Tapping it enabled users to alter the bitrate on the fly.

The release prompted many reports to speculate the launch of the feature was imminent.

However, the streaming giant has clarified to TechCrunch the beta program was not meant for consumers and has now been pulled from the Google Play store.

Whenever it arrives, the data-saving mode will allow Netflix members to view lower quality videos that don’t consume as much bandwidth.

It’ll be ideal for those seeking to catch a quick episode while on their daily commute without draining the allowance.

The company has recently resisted calls from users to make its catalogue available for offline viewing, claiming it is not a compelling proposition.

Subscribers to the Amazon Prime Instant Video platform have been able to download a limited amount of content since late last year.
