Netflix arrives on Virgin Media TiVo boxes

Selected Virgin Media TiVo customers will now get access to the new Netflix app via their set-top boxes.

The first time the TV and movie streaming service has come to a pay-TV platform, Virgin Media will be offering the Netflix app to selected customers at first, with general availability arriving later this year.

The Virgin Media Netflix pilot starts this week with the app being offered to around 40,000 TiVo customers “already selected” by the cable TV provider.

Those chosen will be able to access the Netflix app via the Apps & Games section of Virgin Media TiVo. New customers can sign up for a Netflix membership, or existing users can simply sign in.

“We’re delighted to be bringing yet another groundbreaking TV service onto TV screens in millions of Virgin Media homes,” said Dana Strong, Virgin Media’s CEO. “Netflix is a fabulous addition to Virgin Media TiVo, enabling our customers to enjoy even more of their favourite shows and movies simply and easily – all through their TV set-top box and at outstanding value.”

All Virgin Media TiVo users will get access to the app after the pilot period has successfully finished at an unknown point later this year. When they get the app, they’ll be able to enjoy Netflix original series like House of Cards, Arrested Development and Orange is the New Black.

The Netflix app joins another recent addition to TiVo set-top boxes, BT Sport, which joined Virgin Media last month.

“The UK has given Netflix a fantastic welcome and we’re excited to be partnering with Virgin Media to bring an amazing Netflix experience to Virgin Media customers,” said Bill Holmes, Global Head of Business Development at Netflix.

Via the TiVo set-top box Virgin Media customers also get access to on-demand apps like BBC iPlayer. They also have Virgin Movies or can subscribe to Sky Movies or PictureBox to get their film fix.
