Nest Protect smoke alarm sales stopped due to Nest Wave issues

Nest has announced that it is stopping all sales of new Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms due to issues with the Nest Wave feature.

During its regular lab testing, Nest has discovered that the Protect alarm can be inadvertently turned off through a “unique combination of circumstances” connected to Nest Wave.

The Nest Wave functionality allows you to turn off your alarm when it is sounded with a wave of the hand, but Nest has now discovered that this can be unintentionally activated.

Scarily, this means that potentially your Nest Protect alarm could be turned off and not sound in the event of a real fire.

Reassuringly, Nest explains that it is “not aware of any customers who have experienced this”, but the company wants to address the issues immediately.

“We feel that the best and safest thing to do is to immediately disable the Nest Wave feature to resolve the issue and remove any safety concerns,” said Nest CEO Tony Fadell. “While we fix Nest Wave we have also halted sales of all new Nest Protect alarms to ensure no one buys an alarm that needs an immediate update.”

Once the Nest Wave has been fixed, the company will issue a software update to turn it back on, but this will only occur once “extensive testing” has been carried out and the safety agencies in the UK, Canada and US approve it.

“We expect this to take at least two or three months and we’ll continue to update you as we have more information.”

If these issues annoy and inconvenience you too much, Nest is even offering a full refund on your Nest Protect if you head to the Nest customer support team. These guys will be able to answer any questions you have about the Nest Wave issues as well.

“We’re enormously sorry for the inconvenience caused by this issue. The team and I are dedicated to ensuring that we can stand behind each Nest product that comes into your home, and your 100 per cent satisfaction and safety are what motivates us.”
