nVidia Launches Latest Flagship Notebook GPU

As I have often remarked – though it has never been more true – another month, another flagship GPU...

Following the significant launch of its 8M series of DirectX 10 compatible notebook graphics chipsets last month nVidia has wasted no time (technically 33 days) in spicing it up with a new top of the liner.

The '8700M GT' may not be a linguistic shocker but it will have those who seek the latest and greatest licking their pale blue anaemic lips. Upping the ante from previous top dog, the 8600M GT, the 8700M GT sports the same 32 stream processers but boosts the GPU and shader clock rates to 625MHz (from 472MHz) and 1,250MHz (from 950MHz) respectively – big gains. The memory speed is also increased from 700MHz to 800MHz and you'll be able to load it with up to 512MB RAM.

Consequently nVidia is touting major performance improvements with the Texture Fill Rate leaping from 7.6 gigatexels per second to 10 gigatexels per second putting it within touching distance of the best graphics cards in the desktop space. Furthermore, like all 8M series GPUs, the 8700M GT features support for DirectX 10 and nVidia's 'PureVideo HD' which takes on all the duties required for processing and playback of high definition material freeing up the CPU for other tasks.

The world and his wife – as usual – has signed up to announce laptops which will utilise the GPU including Toshiba, Evesham, VoodooPC to name but a few. Expect machines built around it to arrive in to next four to six weeks.

...and if you just purchased a shiny new laptop with an 8600M GT GPU I'm sorry – that's just how the graphics market works!
