It's only to be expected that having launched the GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce GTX 280 that nVidia would be looking to update its mobile GPUs too. Especially given many previous-generation chips are rather prone to failure. If Notebook Italia's sources are correct (in our experience thay usually are), those details are now out.

Five new graphics chips look set to roll out, and it looks like there's a replacement for every card currently on offer in the 8000M-series from the slow to the fast.

The cards line up with specs as follows:

9700M GT
32 shaders
625MHz core clock
1,550MHz shader clock
128-bit Memory interface
800MHz memory clock

9700M GTS
48shaders
530MHz core clock
1,325MHz shader clock
256-bit Memory interface
800MHz memory clock

9800M GTS
64 shaders
600MHz core clock
1,500MHz shader clock
256-bit Memory interface
800MHz memory clock

9800M GT
96 shaders
500MHz core clock
1,250MHz shader clock
256-bit Memory interface
800MHz memory clock

9800M GTX
112 shaders
500MHz core clock
1,250MHz shader clock
256-bit Memory interface
800MHz memory clock

Going just by the on-paper performance, the new range look set to the trend of closing the gap between desktop and mobile performance. The 9800M GTX, is pretty much an 8800 GT on a spec-to-spec comparison, although doubtless the thermal constraints of the notebook model are undoubtedly much lower.

nVidia will almost certainly make the GPUs official soon, and the usual suspects will announce systems featuring them in due course.
