Gameloft has released N.O.V.A. 3, the latest instalment in its Halo-indebted first-person shooter series. It’s available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad for £4.99. A Universal app, the one purchase gets you both phone and tablet versions.
N.O.V.A. 3 is – like its predecessors – a first-person shooter. With an art style reminiscent of Xbox shooter series Halo, it sees you battle aliens across a variety of other-worldly environments and, for a change, Earth. The single-player campaign features 10 levels, and there is also a 12-player multiplayer mode with six maps. These are not co-op levels, though, rather using the traditional Capture the Flag and Deathmatch play styles.
Gameloft claims that N.O.V.A. is a “new FPS benchmark” for the iOS platform, with advanced lighting effects, ragdoll physics and particle effects all in. It supports the Retina display of the iPad 3, and runs a Gameloft-made graphics engine that also powered the impressive-looking Modern Combat 3, released in March 2012. As the video demonstrates, there are vehicle sections as well as run ‘n’ gun shooting, and you even get to control a mech. At present, N.O.V.A. 3 is only available for iOS devices. However, Gameloft says an Android version is the works, with a tentative release planned for later this month. We’ll be back with a full review soon.
