MWC 2008: LG: It’s All About The Big Touchscreen

LG hits the high notes with an impressive collection of new models.

LG’s handsets have been a revelation over the last two years and the company’s unstoppable force looks set to continue in 2008 following this line-up…

There are a number of highlights in today’s announcements so the headline grabber is debateable, but for me it is the ‘KF700’ – a wickedly sharp 3G slider with huge 3in touchscreen display and gesture control features. Backing this up are full screen video playback, an MP3 player, scaleable web browser and three megapixel camera along with Bluetooth connectivity and full array of Google tools including integrated Search, Blogs, Gmail, Maps and YouTube. LG left out the size and weight, so let’s hope it isn’t too much of a compromise. We’ll know by mid-March.

Right behind the KF700 is the KF600, another slider but this time with the interesting idea of incorporating side-by-side screens in a DS-style arrangement. The top screen is a 2in QVGAer and acts as the main display, while the lower 1.5 incher displays context sensitive buttons. Behind the scenes is a 3MP camera, FM tuner and EDGE connectivity and it’s pocket friendly at 101.2 x 50.7 x 14.1mm and 107g.

Rounding off the KF line is the KF510, a familiar handset to regular readers since I scooped it at the start of last week and this love-it-or-hate-it slider comes rammed with touch sensitive buttons. If you’re on the love-it side then you’ll also be buoyed by the 3MP camera, slim 10.9mm design, tempered glass screen and audio and video playback.

Moving onto the business side of things we come to the ‘KT610’, a 3G flip phone with full Qwerty thumbboard, Symbian OS, GPS, 2.4in internal QVGA resolution display and 1.45in external 160 x 64 display, 2MP camera and Bluetooth 2.0. No word on what business apps will be on there, but expect the usual suspects when it rolls out in May.

Lastly we have the previously announced KS20, a 3G Windows Mobile smartphone with 2.8in touchscreen display, 2MP camera, WiFi, the usual 256MB ROM / 128MB RAM configuration, FM tuner, audio and video playback, microSD and surprisingly dainty dimensions of 99.5 x 58 x 12.5mm and 95g. It should be popping out at any minute.

Onwards and upwards, loads more to cover yet…

”’Note:”’ In related news, the LG Viewty has received DivX certification making it the first phone to do so and meaning it will be able to playback and natively record in the format. This will also eliminate the time taken to convert files and enables direct playback on DiVX certified products including camcorders and DVD players.

All new Viewtys will ship with this added functionality, older handsets will attain it via an imminent firmware upgrade.
