Multi-system Windows update receives Halo inspired codename

The next substantial Windows update, codenamed ‘Threshold’, will arrive simultaneously across PCs, smartphones, tablets and Xbox One consoles, latest reports have suggested.

Highlighting Microsoft’s efforts to make its multi-system platforms offer a single, harmonious user experience, the all-encompassing Windows update will reportedly be rolled out during Spring 2015.

The codename ‘Threshold’ is taken from the name of a planet that was orbited by the Halo superstructure, in the first of the popular Sci-Fi games franchise, 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved.

Following news that Microsoft harbours plans to create a unified app store; reports suggest that company engineers are working to ensure that user interfaces for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One become increasingly similar.

The proposed objective of ‘Threshold’ is to “add another level of commonality across Microsoft’s various Windows-based platforms”, through the promotion of each system’s ‘high value activities’ (such as Netflix or Bing).

However, before such an all encompassing facelift can take place, Microsoft plans to release more minor updates to Windows 8.1 and ensure Windows Phone 8 is brought up to speed with the new OS.

Windows 8.1 was recently released as a free update and brought the welcome return of the Start button, a classic feature that was conspicuously absent upon the launch of Windows 8.
