Mozilla wants your help to save the internet

Encryption is the word of the hour, and almost everyone has an opinion on what the future of privacy should look like.

Mozilla has announced a new campaign to tackle what it describes as “governments attempting to undermine encryption”.

The software giant, famous for its Firefox web browser, has asked that all internet users pledge their support for encryption.

“Today, encryption is being threatened around the world,” writes Mark Surman, Mozilla Executive Director. “More and more governments are proposing policies that would harm user security by weakening encryption.”

Surman continues: “From France to Australia to the UK, these suggested measures would thwart strong encryption for everyday internet usrs. And in the US, the FBi was asking Apple to undermine the security of its own products.”

Mozilla has also released a video entitled ‘Stand Up for Strong Encryption’.

“In the future, we believe protecting encryption will take more than action from just tech companies,” says a Mozilla spokesperson. “If we want to protect encryption, we need millions of everyday internet users to take a stand.”

The spokesperson continues: “We’re building a grassroots movement that will call policy makers, share free encryption software and tips, and more, and when it’s necessary.”
