The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could face stiff competition in the phablet market this autumn, with Motorola rumoured to be working on a 5.9-inch Nexus handset.
With Google branded Nexus smartphones and tablets having become serious players in their respective markets in recent years, latest reports have suggested that the search giant is now partnering with Motorola on its first phablet offering.
According to the folks over at AndroidPolice, a 5.9-inch Nexus handset is in the works under the codename of Shamu – presumably in honour of the famous orca.
Although detailed specs of the as yet unconfirmed remain a mystery, the reports have claimed that the Nexus phablet will land alongside, not instead of, the heavily rumoured Google Nexus 6 smartphone, running the I/O demoed Android L OS direct from the box.
A precise Nexus phablet release date is also still shrouded in much mystery, although it has been suggested that device will hit retailers around September or October.
If accurate, this late Q3, early Q4 launch window will see the handset go head-to-head with the IFA 2014 bound Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the repeatedly teased 5.5-inch iPhone 6 phablet.
Although Motorola had been repeatedly tipped to have been working on a Nexus device, since Google announced it would be selling off Motorola to Lenovo, such reports have largely died down.
As always, given the less than official foundation of these murmurings and the anonymous nature of the claimed insiders, we must stress that these rumours be taken with a considerable pinch of salt.
