The second iTunes phone appears and its cursed by stupidity too...
We first saw this phone waaaay back at 3GSM in February and it caused quite a stir. The SLVR is the candy bar follow up to the RAZR and now it comes with what appears to be an added bonus: iTunes.
Of course by now we all know that the first iTunes was a bust. The ROKR stank. It was a badly designed, poorly thought out mess and since it launched the same day as the nano it has hardly been seen since. A second attempt was needed. Urgently. Consequently we have the SLVR L7 (yup, “L7” bit’s new), a phone we said lovely things about at first sight but one that was – until now – never marketed as a specialist music phone. Is this a panic move? Seems to be. Is it another disaster? Yes and no.
“Quirky” is the word I’d use. The reason for this is because despite its obvious good looks and pocket saving size and weight (86g) it’s a little odd. As a phone it is fine. There’s a TransFlash slot, Bluetooth, nice 262k 176 x 220 pixel display and Mpeg4 video playback and recording, but… and wait for this… ”there’s no headphone jack”. You heard me right.
It seems Motorola – in its increasingly mystifying wisdom – has decided the phone will use Bluetooth headphones only (how else do we explain the appearance of these?). Now this would be all well and good if we were living in 2007, but we’re not and (to quote a well known beer commercial) “It’s Not Ready Yet”. Bluetooth sound quality is still naff. It’s only just become good enough for phone conversations, so it isn’t going to do your brand new copy of Funeral any justice at all. This is a deal breaker for me.

Still, if you like your phones sleek and sexy by all means go for one, it should arrive in time for Chrimbo. On the other hand, if you want a music phone Sony Ericsson’s Walkman line is still your best bet (and you can get an iTunes mod for them). Come on Apple, make the world happy and just build the fan boys’ dream will you…
