Motorola has unveiled its latest Android smartphone the Motorola RAZR i. Packing a 4.3in screen into a chassis not much bigger than an iPhone 4S and with a superfast Intel processor, it could be a surprise hit.

As well as its 540 x 960 pixel screen and speedy performance it also has a tough kevlar back and splashproof coating to protect from rain and spillages. Other features include support for NFC, microSD memory expansion and a large 2000mAh battery.

It's the edge to edge display that'll catch your eye first though, with the AMOLED panel running the full width of the glass screen. It's not quite true edge to edge as the metal sides of the phone still account for about 3mm either side but it's still impressive that Motorola has fit a 4.3in display into a phone with dimensions of just 122.5mm x 60.9mm x 8.3mm.

Like the Orange San Diego, at the heart of this phone is a 32nm Intel processor, which runs at a whopping 2GHz and uses a different architecture to the ARM-based chips used in most other phones such as the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. This has already proven to be among the fastest phone processors available but due to its architecture differences it isn't fully compatible with every app on the Google Play Store. Intel estimates between 5% and 30% of apps are incompatible, though you should find most of the popular apps accounted for.

One of the benefits of the fast processor is that the camera app can boot up in under a second, even when the phone is locked, and it can shoot 10 shots in under a second, making it great for capturing fast action.

Out of the box the phone will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but an update to 4.1 Jelly Bean is already in the works.

Available from October the Motorola RAZR i will be ranged in the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. Pricing hasn't yet been confirmed.
