Revealed: Can Motorola’s ‘shatterproof’ phone survive a 1000-foot drop?

Manufacturers always made bold claims about their products, all of which should be put to the test.

Motorola’s purportedly “shatterproof” smartphone has been given the ultimate drop test, courtesy of a 1000-foot fall from the sky.

The Moto X Force is alleged to have achieved speeds of somewhere between 280- and 360-kmph during its incredible descent, as claimed by tech vloggers iGyaan.

Here are the results:

As you can see, the phone lived through the ordeal, despite the massive fall.

However, it’s worth noting that after a certain distance, a phone reaches terminal velocity, and won’t speed up anymore. Wired estimates that an iPhone reaches terminal velocity at 50 metres, for instance.

As such, a phone dropped from 100 metres and a phone dropped from 10,000 metres should hit the ground at the same speed.

Regardless, the handset is clearly a hardy beast, and is testament to Motorola’s diligent design department.

Late last year, we put the Moto X Force through our own drop test trial.

The hardy handset managed to survive an impressive 50 drops and hits largely unscathed.
