Like having the headmaster take charge of a naughty class...
In the last quarter Motorola saw sales slump 38 per cent and its CEO resign, in the quarter before that it lost its global number two position to Samsung. New highly tanned CEO Greg Brown has had enough.
In one of his first actions since taking over from the disastrous reign of Ed ‘RAZR PEBL ROKR’ Zander, Brown has announced he will be taking direct control of the company’s money bleeding handset division. A leaked memo picked up by Reuters revealed the gory details.
The move follows just a few days after Motorola admitted the performance of its handset division had become so poor it had even considered spinning it off in a damage limitation exercise. For years now the company has struggled to come up with any decent successor to its RAZR phone producing flop after flop after flop after flop and quite frankly radical steps are long overdue.
Whether Brown’s direct control will produce the upturn required on the other hand is highly debatable. After all, the most important thing in having successful models is an innovative and productive R&D Department and, as we all know, Motorola’s been dining out on the original RAZR’s success ever since that handset launched four years ago.
I’ll give you 5:4 on for further chaos and the division being sold/spun off before 2009…
