Moto G first for Android 5.0 Lollipop update

Motorola's popular affordable smartphone, the first generation Moto G, looks set to be the first smartphone to receive an Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

The new version of Android hasn't even made its way to older Nexus devices yet, but reports suggest that the brilliant Moto G is getting its taste of Lollipop first.

Ars Technica is reporting that its unlocked US version of the Moto G started downloading the 386.7MB update in the early hours of the morning (going by UK time).

Of course, this could be a limited roll-out ahead of the full release. Android Police has received a tip that Motorola has begun a 'soak test' of last year's budget champion.

This means rolling the Android 5.0 update out to a small handful of devices. If that goes well, the rest of the world's Moto G handsets (and there are quite a few) will follow.

Any way you cut it, the Moto G is probably going to go down as the first smartphone to receive an Android 5.0 update - ahead of even the Nexus 5. Earlier in the week, LG confirmed that its LG G3 flagship would be getting Android 5.0 some time this week, but it seems as if Motorola has pipped it to the post.

Of course, Motorola's big advantage here is that its version of Android is pretty much stock, with just a few custom Motorola apps bundled in. It also helps that the company was selected to create this year's Nexus 6, which will be the first phone to ship with Android 5.0 pre-installed.
