Monitor Audio's latest range of surround sound speakers is now available. The Monitor Audio Shadow speakers don't come cheap, but are super-slim and sure to sound top-dollar.
The Monitor Audio Shadow range fulfils every home cinema speaker need, bar a subwoofer. It is comprised of the diddy Shadow 25 satellite speaker, which has a 4in flat RDR driver - rather than a traditional cone driver - and a 25mm C-CAM dome tweeter, the 70cm-high Shadow 50 and the floorstander-size 81cm-tall Shadow 6 and the Shadow Centre unit.
Aside from the smallest speaker, they all use two 4in flat drivers, a pair of 4in flat ABR bass drivers and a 25mm tweeter. Using these skinny speaker units lets the housings stay amazingly slim - even the largest is just 40mm thick, like its smaller cousins. Aside from the Shadow 25, which come with desktop stands, they are designed to be wall-mounted, and should look fantastic alongside a large-screen TV.
With such a slim profile, they are much more lounge-friendly than most of Monitor Audio's top-end speakers, which largely value sound quality over size. However, these are passive speakers and will require an amp. And preferably a subwoofer too. They come in just the one finish, black anodised aluminium.
A pair of the Monitor Audio Shadow 25s will set you back £500, the larger 50 £800, the Shadow 60 £900 while the centre unit is £450. With 40-120 power handling, most home cinema receivers should have no trouble driving these units. They may not be cheap, but few high-end speakers are this unobtrusive.
