Mode for Android Wear sets the standard for smartwatch straps

Google has announced a new standardised strap for Android Wear smartwatches.

The Mode straps are available from today in silicone and leather and are compatible with all current Android Wear devices.

The snap and swap mechanism deployed by the straps should make it much easier for smartwatch adopters to alter the look and feel of their timepiece.

The new standard solves one of the inherent problems for Google compared with Apple’s pursuit of smartwatch nirvana.

As there are so many different manufacturers with a stake in the ecosystem, finding ubiquitous solutions has proved difficult.

With Apple, naturally being the only company creating its watch, creating a single solution was an advantage allowing a third of all owners to regularly change their strap.

This should make it easier for Android Wear enthusiasts to rock a different look for work and another for exercise without everything getting too fiddly.

The $59 bands will be available from the Google Store as well as a number of third-party electronics retailers.
