mobiBLU is a company that infuriates me and here’s why: it has gone and made a third Cube player – to follow-up the completely awful but surprisingly successful original and the rubbish and far less successful successor.
‘Cube3’ is living proof that not all companies believe in technological evolution and good design. After all, it has the same 28 x 28 x 28mm dimensions as both its predecessors, making it either a) pocket unfriendly or b) chain wearingly stealable (not all thieves have good taste). Storage is unchanged too at 2GB, as are the pitiful 64 x 64 pixel OLED display and unintuitive side controls. In the very definition of pointlessness, video is now on the menu (WMV, MPG and ASF can be ripped into a proprietary MSV format) though battery life dwindles from an unremarkable 17 hours to a hideous 10.
On the plus side the Cube3 does at least support the fundamental MP3, WMA and PlayForSure DRM (though not iTunes AAC/AAC+) and an FM tuner with voice recorder has hopped aboard. Against this, the idiotic single headphone, file transfer and charging port means the player cannot be charged and used at the same time.
I could go on, but the bile in me is already building to dangerous levels. In sum, if you really hate your money and want to miss out on far better, cheaper and more capacious players like the 4GB Sansa Clip and 4GB Zen Stone then blowing $99 (£50) on the Cube3 is exactly what you should do.
For interested parties, it’s scheduled for 1 May… along with your lobotomy.
