Mio Announces Windows based SmartPhone

Mio announces its forthcoming 8390 Windows Mobile Smartphone for the UK market.

Last night Mio Technology launched the 8390. This is its first Smartphone in the UK and TrustedReviews was at the launch to give you the low down.

The Mio 8390 is based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 operating system and is powered by an Intel PXA262 200MHz processor. It also features a 2.2in TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, which is capable of 16-bit colour.

Other features include 32MB of user accessible memory and support for SD and MMC memory cards up to 512MB. The Mio 8390 supports EGSM 900/1800/1900 networks and GPRS Class 8. You will also find support for T9 text input and a built in VGA camera that can take both stills and video.

The Mio 8390 measures 99.03 x 50.98 x 24.2 mm (H x W x D) and weighs 125 grams. Mio states a talk time of about three hours and a standby time of between 70-100 hours.

The phone is supplied with a docking cradle, which works over USB 1.1 and although the Mio 8390 lacks Bluetooth it does offer IrDA support. You can also use the Mio 8390 as an MP3 player – you can even use MP3 files for ring tones.

Based on Windows Mobile 2003, the Mio 8390 operating system will be familiar to anyone that has used a Pocket PC. With applications such as Outlook, Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger and Windows Media Player as part of the package, it should be a familiar experience to anyone familiar with the Windows user interface.

There is also support for Java MIDP 2.0 and Windows Mobile games and we were given a demonstration of the phones gaming talents during the presentation.

AGB Global has been appointed as the UK distributor of the Mio 8390 and it’s currently in talks with retailers to bring the phone to the street. AGB supplies a second battery with the phone, as well as a set of portable speakers to take advantage of the built-in MP3 player. AGB also bundles software that enables you to sync your SMS messages with Outlook, a GPRS monitor to keep track of your data usage and a utility for backing up your phone to an SD memory card.

AGB Global is offering a SIM free Mio 8390 for sale at a retail price of £379 including VAT. For more information you can visit AGB Global here.
