The phenomenally-successful open world building game Minecraft is now available to download and play in virtual reality for owners of the Samsung Gear VR headset.
Minecraft VR is now available from the Oculus Store, providing fans have a Gear VR and a compatible Samsung handset.
The VR version of the game, which has been in testing for months, can currently be downloaded to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4/5, Galaxy S6/Edge or Galaxy S7/Edge.
In order to play the game, which supports all of the feature and modes of the Pocket Edition, owners must also connect a controller to their smartphones.
Oculus’ John Carmack tweeted to congratulate the team at Mojang and Microsoft. “Thanks for all the hard work — Minecraft GearVR turned out great!” he wrote.
Carmack also advised gamers to play in a swivel chair and not to rely on the right stick to rotate a character. “Turn in reality,” he wrote.

In a post on the Oculus Blog he said: “My strongest memories of being inside VR are from the time I’ve spent exploring Minecraft on Gear VR. Experiencing it in virtual reality changes it from an abstract activity to a visceral one – it goes from a sense of playing the game to one of being inside your world, and spinning around to find a creeper sneaking up on you leaves a powerful impression.”
As yet, Minecraft VR for Windows remains unavailable to the public, so it cannot be played on the Oculus Rift.
