Microsoft wish to make cross-buy a “platform feature” for PC and Xbox One

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer hopes to make cross-buy and cross-save functionality a “platform feature” of PC and Xbox One.

Yesterday, it was announced that Quantum Break would be releasing on Xbox One and PC on the same day, and will no longer be a console exclusive.

The game will support cross-buy and cross-save functionality when it launches on April 5, which is a first for the company.

Microsoft aim to make this a “platform feature” in the future, with the idea of bringing first-party games to both Xbox One and PC.

When asked on Twitter if third-party games will adopt the same features, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said he’d make it a “platform feature”.

“We’ll make it a platform feature,” Spencer replied. “We think it’s good for gamers.”

Spencer hopes to implement these features at a system level, but it’s unlikely all third party publishers will support the idea.

First-party releases are guaranteed, so we may see Halo and Gears of War on PC if we’re lucky.

Alongside Quantum Break, Microsoft is also planning to bring Fable Legends, ReCore and Sea of Thieves to PC.

Those pre-order the digital version of Quantum Break will receive a free download code for the Windows 10 version.

Console exclusives simply aren’t a relevant or viable business practice nowadays, so it’s great to see Microsoft embracing the idea of going multi-platform with first-party titles.

The more people who get to play something, the better.

Quantum Break is scheduled to release on April 5 for Xbox One.
