Microsoft has an unlikely partner in the Hololens department

Microsoft has teamed up with none other than car-maker Volvo to bring its HoloLens technology to showrooms.

The two companies are joining forces to co-develop autonomous vehicle tech, with Volvo set to introduce Microsoft’s augmented reality headset into its car showrooms.

The headsets are expected to be used to show customers different colour options and could even demonstrate car safety features such as airbags.

The partnership is likely to lead to further crossovers between Microsoft tech and and Volvo’s vehicles, especially considering Volvo’s recently revealed Concept 26 autonomous car.

In an update on its website, Volvo says: “HoloLens could offer new ways to explore our cars and services, bringing them vividly to life.”

“We are the first car brand to collaborate with Microsoft to develop this pioneering technology, which uses holograms to seamlessly combine the real and digital world.”

Microsoft’s wireless HoloLens headset allows you to interact with holograms superimposed on real-world environments.

It was first shown off last year at Microsoft’s Windows 10 event and there has been no word on an official release date since, although a consumer version is unlikely to arrive for some time.

Volvo has not announced when we can expect the new HoloLens experience to launch in its showrooms, but does say on its website that it is ‘eager to bring this experience to customers’.

The company is currently exhibiting its Concept 26 vehicle, which features a tablet in the centre console and 25inch flat-screen monitor,  at the Los Angeles Motor show.
