Microsoft touts Xbox One’s Skype-aided voice chat improvements

The Xbox One’s new gaming headset will provide dramatically improved voice clarity, compared to its Xbox 360 counterpart, Microsoft revealed on Thursday.

The newly-designed headset, which after much procrastination, will indeed come bundled with every Xbox One console has been boosted by the inclusion of Skype’s audio technology.

The communication between the Xbox One Chat headset and the console itself is aided by the Skype audio codec which, of course, has been aiding online voice chats since the dawn of time.

In a post on the official Xbox Wire blog, Major Nelson (aka Xbox Live’s Larry Hyrb) wrote: “Xbox One offers higher quality voice chat with the Xbox One Chat Headset compared to Xbox 360—whether you’re chatting in-game or through party chat with Skype on Xbox One.”

Beyond the addition of Skype’s expertise, Hyrb explained how the Xbox One’s new wireless controller’s expansion port improves data transfer between the controller and console.

He said it enables crystal clear digital audio, capturing and rendering speech at 24 KHz PCM. That’s triple the rendering sample rate and a 50 per cent capture rate improvement compared with the 360.

“We think gamers will immediately notice the improvement here—whether it’s through crystal clear in-game chats over the Xbox One Chat Headset, through the sound of crisper conversations taking place over Skype or with your multiplayer party chat,” added Hyrb.

“We can’t wait for you to hear the improvements first-hand in a couple months.”

All in all, it should mean those vocal taunts post handing out vicious beatings on Xbox Live can now be delivered for a little more clarity.

Head to the source to listen to the improvements for yourself.
