Microsoft Surface 13

Microsoft’s first tablet makes for an impressive debut. Surface is a 10.6-inch Windows RT slate with a 1366 x 768 IPS screen, Tegra 3 innards backed by 2GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage. It comes in a beautifully designed magnesium alloy chassis, and offers more connectivity than most of its immediate Android and iOS rivals.

However, what really makes the Microsoft Surface stand out in the tablet market is its optional keyboard covers, which let you type on a touch or physical keyboard that’s wafer-thin but provides a great experience. Combined with the full Microsoft Office 2013 that comes bundled with WinRT, this makes Surface a fantastic productivity solution.

Mind you, there’s no lack of competition from both Windows RT and regular Windows 8 convertibles, which mostly beat the Surface on battery life as they usually hide a second battery in their keyboard docks.

For power users, one of these or the Microsoft Surface Pro with its 1080p screen and Core i5 processor will probably be a better choice. However, if Windows for ARM doesn’t deter you and you’re willing to have a little patience with its limited app selection, the first Surface is well worth considering.

If this is you or you want to get a taste of what Microsoft’s Surface Pro will look like, check out our video review below.
