The Microsoft Surface Windows 8 tablet will come to the UK on 26 October, starting at £399, Microsoft has confirmed.

Microsoft's Surface will launch in eight key territories on 26 October, including here in the UK. Other countries that will get the tablet on day one include France, Germany, Australia, the US, Hong Kong, China and Canada.

Microsoft says the RT version of the tablet will sell for £399, which gets you the 32GB Surface sans keyboard. There are two covers available for the tablet, the Touch Cover for £99.99 and the Type Cover for £109.99.

The Microsoft Surface Type Cover has become one of the stand-out features of the Windows 8 tablet, claiming to provide the device with all the best bits of a tablet and laptop in one gadget.

The RT Microsoft Surface tablet features a 10.6in display, is 9.3mm thick and weighs 676g. Both 32GB and 64GB versions will be available, and the tablet has a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

There's a second family in the Microsoft Surface family, too. The Windows 8 Pro models are chunkier and heavier, but offer much more power, making them the choice for those who need to replace a high-power laptop.

The Microsoft Surface family will be launched alongside Windows 8 as the "flagship" tablet to feature the new operating system. However, plenty of other manufacturers have already shown-off tablets in the same vein.

The Asus Vivo Tab RT, Samsung Ativ Tab RT and Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 are all Windows 8 tablets that have an eye on the 2012 tablet crown. None will be available quite as early as the Microsoft Surface line-up, though. There are benefits to being the son of the boss.
