Microsoft has revealed the Surface Pro price, announcing that the 64GB edition of its advanced Windows 8 tablet will cost $899 (around £560).

The information was revealed on Microsoft’s company blog, which also said that the 128GB version will be $999 (£620). Both models will be available from January 2013.

The Surface Pro boasts a full version of the Windows 8 OS as well as a powerful Intel Core i5 processor, making it a beefier prospect than the already available Surface RT, which offers the stripped down Windows RT OS and a low power ARM processor. That means that the Pro will only offer around half the battery life of the RT – which is around four hours total. Not much for a tablet, or an 11-inch laptop for that matter.

Also on board the Surface Pro is a USB 3.0 port, 4GB of RAM, a 10.9-inch full HD 1920 x 1080 ClearType display and a Mini DisplayPort output able to drive an external screen with a resolution of up to 2,560 x 1,440. A Surface Pen stylus for drawing and making notes will be included with every model.

Despite the different software and hardware, the Surface Pro looks (and weighs) virtually the same as its cheaper counterpart. It’s under 14mm in thickness and weighs less than two pounds.
